Fed Raises Rate; Savings & Loan Rates Follow!
Learn how these moving rates affect YOU today and in the future.

The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate on March 21st to its highest level in a decade. This is the sixth time since 2015 that the rate has risen and likely won't be the last jump during 2018. If you're wondering how or if this will affect you, the short answer is yes.

Any rate change from the Federal Reserve can have a huge impact on the rate you receive from your financial institution. In this case, the rate is going up. If you are trying to save your money, you'll see your money growing a bit faster. How do you maximize these savings during a time when rates are in your favor?

With rates continuing to rise, members may choose to leave funds in a high-yield savings account (like ACU's Premium Savings / Money Market) and ride along as the rates go up. This account allows for growth while still giving easy access to your money. Another option is to invest in shorter-term CDs or set up ladders to make sure funds become available regularly.

Our members can also take advantage of an ACU Rate-Bump CD, which gives you one chance to bump the CD's rate to the then-current rate during the term of the CD. That way, you have the peace of knowing if the rate goes up, your CD Rate can also go up. Members using a Rate Bump CD can earn as much as 2.10 percent APY* on a five year option today.

On the flip side, rising rates are scary when you have high balances of variable-rate debt. With this in mind, now may be the ideal time to refinance your Adjustable-Rate Mortgage (ARM), credit cards, or lines of credit to one of ACU's fixed-rate options. When you do this, you are assured that your payment won't change as rates get higher.
